Dr. Ziad Ahmed Bahaa-Eldin is an Egyptian lawyer and expert on financial, investment and corporate law, governance, compliance and economic legislation. He is currently the managing partner of "Bahaa-Eldin Law Office in Cooperation with BonelliErede", and senior counsel of "Thebes Consultancy". He is also currently the non-executive chairman of Bank of Alexandria (the Egyptian subsidiary of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group) and a non-executive member on the boards of directors of MTI Egypt, Maridive Group, Samcrete for Industrial Development and Al Salam Hospital Mohandesin, all in Egypt. He is also the non-executive chairman of Uswa Capital in KSA.
He previously held several public positions in Egypt including deputy prime minister for economic development and minister of international cooperation (2013-2014), member of parliament representing South Assiut (2012), executive chairman of the Financial Regulatory Authority “FRA” (2009-2011) and executive chairman of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones “GAFI” (2004-2007). He is also a former non-executive member of the boards of directors of the Central Bank of Egypt (2004-2011), the National Bank of Egypt (2005-2010) and a former senior legal advisor to the minister of economy (1997-2000). Prior to that, he practiced law in Egypt as well as in Washington DC.
Since 2011, Dr. Ziad has been a weekly economic commentator first in Al-Shorouk newspaper and then in Al-Masry Al-Yom, both Egyptian daily newspapers. He contributes occasionally to other Arab and international publications.
He taught law as an adjunct lecturer at the Faculty of Law , Cairo University (1998-2004) and as a visiting lecturer at the Peking University School of Transnational Law, located in Shenzhen (2019). He is a member of the board of trustees of the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration.
Dr. Bahaa Eldin is engaged in various non-profit activities and organizations. He is the founder of the Egyptian Initiative for the Prevention of Corruption (2011) and is currently the chairman of the Ahmed Bahaa-Eldin Cultural Foundation in Assiut, which aims to empower the youth in Upper Egypt through cultural and educational activities. He is also a member of the board of trustees of The American University in Cairo and the Modern English School.
He received his PhD in financial law from the London School of Economics and Political Sciences (1997), an LLM in international business law from King’s College London (1989), a bachelor's degree in economics from The American University in Cairo (1987), and a bachelor's degree in law from Cairo University (1986). He graduated from the Jesuits High School in Cairo (1982).
