Announcing Dr. Hassan Azzazy as Distinguished University Professor
Dear AUC Community,
In recognition of exceptional scholarly merit of the highest distinction, recognized excellence in teaching, and extended service to the University, the AUC Trustees confirm a limited number of senior faculty members to the grade of Distinguished University Professor. I am pleased to announce that Professor Hassan Azzazy has been appointed as AUC’s sixth Distinguished University Professor (DUP).
The selection of Professor Azzazy is the outcome of a rigorous process, which involved a call for nominations, diligent committee-level review and deliberation, consultation with the Provost’s Council and Senate Executive, approvals of the Provost and the President and the endorsement of the Board of Trustees.
Throughout his career, Dr. Azzazy has consistently excelled in teaching as well as research. He is currently the Chair of AUC’s Department of Chemistry. Before joining AUC in 2003, Dr. Azzazy was a postdoctoral fellow and assistant professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD. He is also the director of the International Medical Technology Training program accredited by the Board of Certification of the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
At AUC, Dr. Azzazy has been granted awards for his excellence in teaching as well as his excellence in research and creative endeavors. Among the over 60 global awards and honors he has received, are the Egyptian State Prizes in Advanced Technological Sciences and in Laboratory Medicine and Blood Diseases, The Global Innovator Award from Texas Christian University, Arab Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award from the Dubai Ministry of Commerce, (Ministry of Commerce, Dubai, UAE), 2015; Shoman Foundation Award for Arab Researchers in Medical Sciences, the Life Achievement Award from the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Dr. Azzazy established the Novel Diagnostic and Therapeutic Research Group at AUC, which has been joined by over 30 graduate students. His extensive record of publication includes over 370 journal papers, two books and 25 book chapters.
He has exhibited unparalleled commitment to service to the profession and to AUC, including:
- Collaboration with the European Training Foundation to promote entrepreneurial learning in Egyptian Higher-Ed.
- Organization of National Awareness Campaigns Against Hepatitis C Virus.
- Vice President of the National Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Committee.
- Chairman of Egypt Chapter of the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification.
- Chair of the Clinical Chemistry Examination Committee, BOC, ASCP, Chicago, IL.
- Department chair and member of many committees at the department, school, and university levels at AUC.
Dr. Azazzy’s contributions and accomplishments exemplify the professional qualities that underlie the DUP title. I am honored to count him among AUC’s faculty, and to recognize him as a Distinguished University Professor.
