A Transformative Gift: AUC’s School of Business to be Named in Honor of Onsi Sawiris
December 2, 2024
Dear AUC Community,
I write to share the exciting news that AUC received the single largest philanthropic gift in the University’s history to support excellence in business education, interdisciplinary research and a deeper understanding of global business trends through exchange programs with leading American universities.
In appreciation and recognition of this transformative gift from the Sawiris family, we will name the business school the Onsi Sawiris School of Business in perpetuity. The name honors the exceptional personal and professional legacy of the late Onsi Sawiris, a titan of business in the Middle East, founder of Orascom Group and patriarch of the family.
The gift — a resounding vote of confidence in the business school by one of Egypt’s most prominent business families — will provide funding for scholarships, research and a professorship in AI/data science. In addition, the gift will enable faculty and student exchange programs between AUC and top American universities like the University of Chicago. The direct support to AUC, combined with visiting faculty and student exchange programs with other US universities, have an estimated value of more than $30 million. This gift is made possible thanks to the generosity of the NNS Foundation, the Naguib Sawiris Charitable Fund, Naguib Samih Sawiris, the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development and Orascom Construction.
In 1947, AUC began offering its first economics courses. Today, the business school is the only triple-crown accredited in the region, placing it in the top 1 percent of business schools in the world. We look forward to the continued success of the Onsi Sawiris School of Business at the forefront of global business education.
To celebrate this partnership, we will be organizing a program of special events in Cairo and internationally in the new year.
Sincerely,
Ahmad Dallal
