Aziza Ellozy's Farewell Reception
April 11, 2023
Dear members of the AUC community,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing today to share bittersweet news with you all. As some of you may already know, Dr. Aziza Ellozy, our Associate Provost for Transformative Learning and Teaching, will be retiring at the end of this academic year.
A scholar and a staunch advocate of student-centered learning, Dr. Ellozy has been a member of the community for over 60 years, having earned her BS in Chemistry and her MS in Solid State Science from AUC in the 1960s.Throughout her tenure, she has been a champion of student-centered learning and has played a vital role in transforming STEM education. Her contributions to AUC are vast, and she will undoubtedly be missed by all.
In reflecting on her career, it is clear that Dr. Ellozy has made a significant impact both at AUC and beyond. She has served as a tenured Professor of Natural Science at Fordham University in New York. She returned to AUC in 2002 to become the founding director of the Center for Learning and Teaching. In 2017 she was named AUC's Associate Provost for Transformative Learning and Teaching, where she has overseen multiple key educational initiatives, including Academic Integrity and AUC's quality of education.
She has been a true leader in the STEM education field from the very beginning of her career, when she served as a professor of Chemistry and Natural Science. In fact, her contributions to transforming STEM education have been so valuable that she was selected by Project Kaleidoscope as a Faculty of 21st Century Scholar back in 1994. And the best part is that she remains an active member of the program to this day, continuing to make a positive impact in the education world.
Dr. Ellozy's impact on teaching and learning at our university is immeasurable. Thanks to her leadership of the CLT, our faculty has been able to stay at the forefront of innovative pedagogies and teaching methodologies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led our university's successful shift to online teaching while preserving the quality of our learning, teaching and assessment processes. In addition to these achievements, Dr. Ellozy has been leading the Learning Spaces project, which has brought three active learning classrooms to our campus with more to come in the future. She also established the position of Assistant Provost for Innovative Learning Experiences and oversaw the creation of the Peer Tutoring Center.
Dr. Ellozy's vision for innovation in higher education is best summarized by a quote from John Dewey, "If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow." Under her leadership, AUC has strived to deliver educational missions to our students with the most exciting, relevant, and forward-looking methods.
It's worth noting that Dr. Ellozy has received multiple awards from AUC in recognition of her contributions. As she embarks on the next phase of her life, she will be missed by countless faculty, students, and staff whose experiences at AUC were enhanced by her tireless work.
Dr. Ellozy's passion and dedication to teaching has been an inspiration to us all. We are grateful for her many years of service to AUC and to the field of education, and we wish her all the best in her retirement.
Please join President Dallal and me in expressing our sincere gratitude and well wishes to Dr. Ellozy as she embarks on this new chapter in her life.
President Dallal and I would like to invite you to a farewell reception in Dr. Ellozy's honor on Wednesday, May 3rd, from 1-2pm at the Moataz Al Alfi Terrace. Please join me in wishing her all the best in her future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Ehab Abdel-Rahman, Provost
