Condolence - Elizabeth Sartain
March 13, 2025
Dear AUC Community,
It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of Associate Professor Emerita Elizabeth Sartain, who served for 23 years as a professor of Arabic and Middle East Studies until her retirement from AUC in 2006. Professor Sartain’s contributions to the field and her dedicated service to the university have left a lasting impact on generations of students and colleagues.
Sartain joined AUC as a full-time professor in 1983, earned tenure in 1990, and served until her retirement in 2006. She also held various administrative roles, including program director of Middle East Studies and director of the Core Curriculum. She left a strong legacy that continues to benefit the AUC community.
Sartain is survived by her husband, professor emeritus Hamdi El-Sakkout, their two sons Hani El-Sakkout and Ihab El-Sakkout ’92, and six grandchildren.
The family will be receiving condolences at the Police Mosque in Saykh Zayed on Friday, March 14, 2025 after the ‘Isha prayers. Condolences may also be sent by email to her son, Ihab El-Sakkout: [email protected].
Sincerely,
Ehab Abdel-Rahman
Provost
