March 28, 2025
Dear AUC Community,
It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of Professor Emeritus Abdallah Schleifer, who was a part of the AUC family for over 50 years.
Schleifer first joined AUC in 1983 as a distinguished lecturer in mass communications. In 1988, he established the Kamal Adham Center for Journalism Training and Research and served as its founding director for 17 years. He was granted tenure in 1988, and upon his retirement in 2005, he was granted the professor emeritus status. In 2010, he returned to AUC as an adjunct faculty.
Schleifer had a distinguished career as a journalist, covering the Middle East for regional and international outlets, including serving as the Washington DC bureau chief for Al Arabiya News. He also served as an adjunct scholar at the Middle East Institute in Washington, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia and the Royal Aal al Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought in Amman, Jordan, and as a visiting fellow at St. Anthony’s College, Oxford. Schleifer was also a frequent guest on Al Jazeera English.
The funeral service and burial will take place today, Friday, March 28, following the Asr prayer in the Mosque of the Muslims in the cemetery of Tunis village, Youssef El-Siddiq Center, Fayoum.
Condolence emails may be sent to Abdullah's sister, Marciarose Shestack, at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Ehab Abdel-Rahman
