Condolences - Dr. Saad Eddin Ibrahim
October 3, 2023
Dear AUC Community,
It is with sadness that I share with you news of the passing of AUC Professor Emeritus of Sociology Saad Eddin Ibrahim. An engaged member of the AUC community, Dr. Ibrahim was a Professor of Sociology for 33 years in the (then) SAPE Department and later returned to AUC as an adjunct professor.
He was a respected public intellectual, scholar, author and human rights advocate. His work remains a central reference for students and scholars in the field. He co-edited Arab Society: Class, Gender, Power, and Development (1998) with Professor Emeritus Nicholas S. Hopkins, and authored Egypt, Islam, and Democracy: Critical Essays (2002), among other seminal works.
Please join me in extending our deepest condolences to his wife, Dr. Barbara Ibrahim, founding director of AUC’s John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy, Civic Engagement and Responsible Business, his daughter Randa Ibrahim and son Amir Ibrahim. Messages of condolence can be sent to Barbara at [email protected]
Condolence prayers will take place on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, after Maghrib prayers, at Omar Makram Mosque in Tahrir Square.
Sincerely,
Ehab Abdel-Rahman, Provost
