Condolences - Professor Emeritus John Baboukis
November 25, 2024
Dear AUC Community,
It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of Emeritus Professor of Music, John Baboukis. John joined AUC in 2005 as an assistant professor and Director of the Music Program. He continued to direct the music program until his retirement this past spring. During his 19 years of service, John Baboukis had a profound impact on his students, his colleagues, and the Cairo arts community.
In addition to teaching courses in music theory and music literature, John directed the AUC Chamber Singers and coached numerous ensembles. He also served as the conductor of the Cairo Choral Society and the Cairo Festival Orchestra. He founded and co-directed the Lions of Cairo, who perform medieval, renaissance and baroque Western music.
John was extremely grateful for the support that the AUC community offered to the music program, and was proud of the legacy that he was passing along to his students and his audiences.
John is survived by his wife Johanna (Jody), their daughter Hilary and their son Gregory. The whole family has a deep connection to AUC. Jody served for many years as a member of the Faculty Services Committee. Both Hilary and Gregory attended our ALI summer intensive program, and Hilary attended AUC as a non-degree student from 2014 - 2016.
Condolences may be shared with the family by emailing Jody at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Ehab Abdel-Rahman
Provost
