Condolences - Professor Laila El Baradei
April 18, 2025
Dear AUC Community,
It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of Professor Laila El Baradei, professor and chair of public policy and administration in the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. El Baradei and her husband, Engineer Ibrahim Shoukry, both lost their lives in a tragic car accident earlier today.
El Baradei has been an active member of the AUC community for over 30 years, first as a student BA ('83) and MBA ('88) and then as faculty. She earned her PhD in public administration from Cairo University in 1988 and was a member of the faculty there for over 14 years prior to joining AUC as a visiting associate professor in 2006. In 2009, she was promoted to full professor and was granted tenure in 2012. During her years at AUC, El Baradei served as the first associate dean of the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, and later as the acting dean and then associate dean for research and graduate studies.
El Baradei leaves behind a strong legacy of impact on her students and colleagues, as well as a lasting influence on the local and international public policy sphere. Throughout her career, she has been recognized multiple times for her teaching excellence and her service to the university. She also received numerous awards from local and global organizations such as the United Nations Development Program, the American Society for Public Administration and the Arab Administrative Development Organization.
The funeral prayer will be held tomorrow, Saturday, April 19, following the dhuhr prayer at the Sheikh Zayed Islamic Center, followed by the burial at the El Baradei Cemetery.
El Baradei and Ibrahim are survived by their three children Farah Shoukry ’12, ’16, ’25, Mohamed Shoukry ’12, and Nawara Shoukry ’15.
Additional information regarding condolence visits and emails will be shared as it becomes available.
Sincerely,
Ehab Abdel-Rahman
