Culture of Care: Updates on New Initiatives
November 7, 2024
Dear AUC Community,
As I indicated in my message at the start of the year, we are progressing in many areas of our Strategic Priorities Roadmap. Today, I write to share several initiatives — part of AUC’s unique culture of care — that strengthen our ability to be an inclusive University that fosters belonging and supports wellbeing.
Mental Health and Wellbeing
Since the launch of the Mental Health and Wellbeing initiative two years ago, we continue to work on institutionalizing our support structures through policies and services promoting wellbeing. Much has been accomplished through the commitment and hard work of various stakeholders in our community, but we realize that further growth and improvements lie ahead. The well-being task force created this webpage as a one-stop-shop for mental health and well-being resources, including information on the many programs, support services and initiatives available on campus year-round. The page provides easy access to resources on physical, mental and social, and academic and professional well-being for each constituency — students, faculty, staff, and alumni. I hope you will find it a useful resource and invite you to send any feedback to [email protected].
AccessAUC
The University has always been committed to an inclusive learning and working environment. Central to this commitment is our ability to ensure access — starting from physical spaces and extending to how we do things and our mindsets. We are proud to be the only accessible campus in Egypt and to welcome an increasing number of students with disabilities. As we remain focused on improving our services for students, we also launched last month a new employee mentorship and development program for people with disabilities. Focused on diversity, inclusion and accessibility in the workplace, the program offers job up-skilling, communication skills development, and English language proficiency. To learn more about the program, click here. To raise awareness of the importance of accessibility and inclusion, we are organizing activities to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities on the Tahrir campus on December 3 and the Safe and Inclusive Campus in the Arab World conference in New Cairo on December 4.
Molly Bartlett Endowed Community Fund
During the Board of Trustees visit to campus last month, we announced a new gift from the Bartlett family to create the Molly Bartlett Endowed Community Fund. The purpose of the fund — honoring the spirit of caring for others embodied by the late Molly Bartlett — is to provide emergency assistance to staff members who face unforeseen hardships. As an endowment, the fund will continue to provide support each year in perpetuity. The fund will allow the University to support many more employees who need assistance through the existing Employee Emergency Relief Fund.
In addition, we are working on continuous improvement in all of the service functions across the University’s operation, especially those services with a direct impact on the student experience. There are several ongoing projects in campus services, IT, student support and others. Ultimately, we all share in the collective responsibility to provide excellent service and to foster an inclusive culture of care.
Sincerely,
Ahmad Dallal
