Deans of SCE and LLT
June 6, 2024
Dear AUC Community,
It is my pleasure to share that following two exhaustive international searches, two new deans have been selected. Mahmoud Allam is the new dean of the School of Continuing Education (SCE) and Lamia Eid will be the dean of Libraries and Learning Technologies (LLT). In each of these cases, the new dean brings the highest caliber of professional experience both within AUC and beyond.
Mahmoud Allam has been serving as the interim dean of SCE for the past year, during which time he drove many important developments within the school. He implemented a strategic restructure and introduced modifications to improve the operational efficiency of SCE. He is also leading several growth-focused initiatives, including serving as the chair of the Extended Education Hub (one of the new buildings as part of AUC’s Campus 2026 expansion). Under Allam’s leadership, SCE has increased its outreach activities in Egypt and throughout the region, leading to a significant growth in enrollment.
Allam previously served as the associate dean for industrial partnerships and extended education in AUC’s School of Sciences and Engineering. He also served as the founding president of the Knowledge Hub Universities. A member of the team that founded Nile University in 2003, he remained there until 2018 where he served in many key roles including professor and program director for software engineering and computer engineering, founding dean of the School of Communication and Information Technology, assistant provost for academics, and vice president for finance and administration. Allam earned his bachelor's and master's degree in electrical engineering from Cairo University, and a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin.
Lamia Eid has been the associate dean of the AUC Library since 2016, and since 2019 she has twice served as the interim dean. She is a two-time graduate of AUC (bachelor's degree in political science and master's degree in Middle East history) and has been working at AUC for 38 years, having first joined the library staff in 1986. Since that time, she has served in many academic and administrative leadership roles, including University Ombuds from 2013 - 2016 and the founding director for the Center of Excellence for the Middle East and Arab Cultures from 2009 - 2013. She served on the new campus advisory board as part of the planning for AUC’s move to New Cairo, and on numerous committees of the University Senate. In addition to her outstanding contributions to AUC, from 1992 to 1996, Eid was the founding director of the Misr (Mubarak) Public Library, established via an international cooperation agreement between the German Bertelsmann Foundation and the government of Egypt.
Some of Eid's other key accomplishments include serving as Co-PI on an ASHA grant for the transformation and rejuvenation of the library learning commons, and driving key regional and international governmental partnerships. Eid is a member of numerous local and international bodies, including representing Egypt and AUC at the International Association of University Libraries. She is also a voting member of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. Her extensive professional experience and her longstanding commitment to AUC as both staff and faculty have been excellent preparations for her new role as dean.
I extend my deepest gratitude to the search committees who worked tirelessly to find the best possible candidates for these roles. The dean of libraries search committee was chaired by Zeinab Amin, and the SCE dean search committee by Hoda Mostafa. I thank them, and all of the committee members, for their dedication and hard work throughout these searches.
Please join me in welcoming Mahmoud Allam and Lamia Eid to their new roles.
Sincerely,
Ehab Abdel-Rahman, Provost
