Dear AUC Community,
Please join me in extending heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Deena Boraie, who will be resigning from her position as Vice President of Student Life next month. Deena has been a part of the AUC family for close to 50 years, first as a student, and later as a faculty member and staff.
Deena first came to AUC in 1974, as a student, and ultimately earned three AUC degrees: B.Sc. Chemistry 1978, M.Sc. Solid State Science 1982 and M.A. TEFL 1988. She later earned her Ph.D. in Education from the University of Wolverhampton in the UK. Deena joined the AUC faculty as a teacher in the English Language Institute, and moved to a number of roles in the areas of testing and assessments. Between 2007 and 2018, she served as the Assistant Dean, Associate Dean and then Dean of the School of Continuing Education. Dr. Boraie was appointed as the VP for Student Life in 2018.
In addition to her roles at AUC, Deena has been and remains actively involved in the areas of English language instruction and assessment. She is a Trustee of TIRF - The International Research Foundation for English language education. She is Past President (she served as President from 2013-2014) of the TESOL International Association a large U.S.-based international association for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. Dr. Boraie also serves as the Senior Advisor for Egypt’s Minister of Education for assessment, examinations and curriculum, and has made numerous contributions to K-12 and higher education in Egypt.
With Deena Boraie’s departure, we are now actively recruiting for the position of Dean of Students, to take on the leadership of the Student Life functions. I have established a search committee to work with me on this process, with the following members: Ashraf El-Fiqi, Aziza Ellozy, John Meloy, Michelle Henry (Chair), Ola Morsy, Sherif Kamel, Sharif El Arian, Zeinab Amin. Additionally, and until we recruit a new Dean of Students, an Interim Dean of Students may be appointed. I will keep the community updated.
Deena Boraie is without a doubt a lifelong member of the AUC Community. We are therefore not saying goodbye, but rather saying a huge thank you for her contributions over the years, and wish her nothing but wonderful things in her future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Ehab Abdel-Rahman, Provost
