Construction of Ewart Memorial Hall began in 1927 and was completed in March 1928. The hall was built after an anonymous female donor donated $100,000 in 1925 for an auditorium to be named after her grandfather William Dana Ewart, an American inventor and businessman who had visited Cairo almost 20 years earlier. Over the years, Ewart became the site of popular lectures by prominent speakers from around the world, film screenings and cultural events. In the late 1930s, the Egyptian Broadcasting Company aired a winter series of live monthly radio concerts from Ewart’s stage featuring Um Kalthoum. In March 1999, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke at Ewart Memorial Hall.

Ewart Memorial Hall is a theater-style hall that accommodates 962 seats as follows:

286 seats in the balcony and 676 seats in the parterre

Note: Drinks and food are not allowed in the theater area.

Proscenium Stage Dimensions:

  • 13.20 meters in width (in proscenium 10.60cm + backstage extension 2, 60 cm)
  • 10.40 meters in depth
  • Proscenium height: 8.50 meters
  • Flying system ceiling: 20 meters

 

Curtain and Drapes:

  • 1 X blue border
  • 6 X "black" side stage legs - 3 on each side
  • Movie screen with frame (size 9,00 cm by 5 cm)
  • 2 X sided black drapes - 1 on each side
