| Laila El Baradei, professor of public administration has been selected as The 2024 Recipient of The International Public Administration Award by the American Society of Public Administration (ASPA). The award is given to an individual who holds citizenship in a nation other than the United States; lives and works primarily in a nation other than the United States; and contributes significantly to the field of public administration as a scholar, practitioner, or both - as demonstrated by publications, awards, honors and testimony by the recipient's colleagues and beneficiaries of the recipient's work. El Baradei is the first Egyptian and the first Arab to receive this award. (2024) |
| Thomas Skouteris, associate professor and chair of AUC’s Department of Law, was honored with the Most Inspiring Legal Academic Award in the Middle East by The Law magazine. The award recognizes Skouteris’ influence in the legal field and in the classroom as well as his unique teaching methods, specifically the use of artificial intelligence in the advancement of legal education (2023). |

Maha Bali, professor of practice at the Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT), received the Open Education Awards for Excellence from Open Education Global. The award is given to individuals whose open course materials and professional practices have been recognized as having an impact and influencing peers to share more openly (2023).
Shahjahan Bhuiyan, associate dean for Administration and Undergraduate Studies and associate professor at the Department of Public Policy and Administration, received the Transition and Developing Economies Award from the International Public Policy Association (IPPA). Bhuiyan is being recognized for his contributions to the development of the field of public policy and public administration in developing and transitioning countries (2023).
Moataz Nashaat El-Helaly, assistant professor, Department of Accounting, received the Study UK Alumni Awards (Finalist). The British Council Egypt has launched this prestigious award for the first time, celebrating the outstanding achievements of the UK’s international alumni. The Alumni Awards demonstrate the impact of UK higher education and celebrate the achievements of distinguished UK alumni, raising the profile of the universities they attended and UK higher education. Award winners and finalists are leaders who have used their experience of studying at a UK university to make a positive contribution to their communities, professions and countries (2023).
Atta Gebril, professor of applied linguistics and associate dean for graduate studies and research in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HUSS), won the Abdul Hameed Shoman Award for Arab Researchers in the area of applied linguistics (2023).
Salima Ikram, a distinguished university professor in the Department of Egyptology, has been elected a fellow of the British Academy in recognition of her contributions to the humanities and social sciences. This year's cohort includes 86 fellows from the United Kingdom and other countries (2023).
Magda Mostafa, associate professor of design at the Department of Architecture and associate at Progressive Architects, has been honored with a Friendly and Inclusive Spaces Award from the International Union of Architects (UAI) for her Autism Friendly University Design Guide. UIA’s award is given in recognition of an evidence-based design research project that makes a significant contribution to improved quality of life by facilitating a better understanding of human-centered design and its application to the design of the built environment (2023).
Hesham Sallam, professor at the Institute of Global Health and Human Ecology (IGHHE), received the Robert Lynn Carroll Award at the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology’s 83rd Annual Meeting in recognition of his scholarly excellence in the field. Sallam and his team, many of whom are research assistants at AUC, represented the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) at the event in Ohio, where they were granted five prestigious awards for their leading work in vertebrate paleontology (2023).
Reem Bassiouney, professor and chair Applied Linguistics department, received The Egyptian State Award for Excellence in Literature from the Egyptian State Supreme Council of Culture. This award is given on the basis of life achievements and publications (2022).
Kim Fox, professor of practice at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, received two Best of Festival Awards from the Broadcast Education Association. The Broadcast Education Association is the premier international academic media organization, driving insights, excellence in media production, and career advancement for educators, students, and professionals (2022).
Shahira S. Fahmy, professor of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, received The Mentorship Award at the 9th Undergraduate Research Competition in Public Relations and Mass Communications, Abu Dhabi University (2022).
Ibrahim Karkouti, assistant professor at the Department of Educational Studies, was awarded the 2022 Intriligator Interorganizational Leadership Award for his contributions to the Educational Leadership field. The Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership at the University of Hartford (UHART) offers this award to one of its alumni, who has shown great promise in bringing people and organizations together for the betterment of society (2022).
Nabil Ibrahim Mohareb, associate professor of Architecture and Urban Design, Department of Architects, was awarded the Open House International - Literati Award for best reviewer. This award is for the outstanding academic reviewer for the Open House International Journal (Q2 journal) (2022).
Mohamed Salama, associate professor, Department of Institute of Global Health and Human Ecology, received the SOT Arab Toxicologists Association SIG Outstanding Professional Award. The Outstanding Professional Award is given to an investigator of Arab origin who contributes significantly to understanding and advancing the toxicological science (2023). The Egyptian Ideal Physician Award. The Egyptian Medical Syndicate awards -yearly- an ideal physician who contributed to the medical practice in Egypt (2022).
Kim Fox, professor of practice in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, is the first to win two Best of Festival awards at the 2022 Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts Competition. She received the awards for two separate episodes from her podcast, Ehky Ya Masr.
Nageh Allam, professor and director of the nanotechnology graduate program at The American University in Cairo's (AUC) Department of Physics, has won the 2022 Obada Prize for Distinguished Scientists in Physical Sciences for his multidisciplinary research on water desalination and energy conversion and storage.
Jehane Ragai, Professor Emerita in the Department of Chemistry, received the Most Promising New Textbook Award from The Textbook and Academic Authors Association for her co-authored book with Professor Tamer Shoeib, Technical Art History: A Journey Through Active Learning (2022).
Mohamed Salama, associate professor at the Institute of Global Health and Human Ecology (I-GHHE), received The SOT Arab Toxicologists Association SIG Outstanding Professional Award 2022. The Outstanding Professional Award is given to a young investigator of Arab origin who contributes significantly to understanding and advancing the toxicological science. Furthermore, Salama received the Egypt Ideal Physician for the year 2022 (الطبيب المثالي علي مستوي الجمهورية).
Tamer Shoeib, professor at the Department of Chemistry, received the Most Promising New Textbook Award from The Textbook and Academic Authors Association for his co-authored book with professor Emerita Jehane Ragai, Technical Art History: A Journey Through Active Learning (2022).
Hesham Sallam, associate professor at the Institute of Global Health and Human Ecology (IGHHE), is the winner of the Science and Sustainability Award in the British Council's 2021-2022 Study UK Alumni Awards for his research and leadership in the field.
Amr Adly, the assistant professor at the Department of Political Science, won the 2021 Roger Owen Book Award for his analysis of Egypt's failed economic liberalization strategies. His research covers the period from the 1970s to the revolution that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
Ibrahim Awad, professor of practice and director of the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies in the Department of Public Policy and Administration, was granted the Friends of Migrants Award for his contributions to issues related to migration by The International Organization for Migration in Egypt.
Shahira S. Fahmy, professor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, received the Deborah Gump Research Award at the Champions of Editing Research Competitions of The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) annual convention, USA, August 2021, and Top Paper Award (First place) at the Visual Communication Division of the AEJMC annual convention, USA, August 2021.
Jamal Haidar, assistant professor of economics, Department of Economics, has been ranked by IDEAS-Research Papers in Economics (RePEc) among the Top 10% of Economics Authors (Last 10 years publications) as of December 2021.
Tarek Selim, professor at the Department of Economics, received the Lifetime Research Fellow Award from the Economic Research Forum (ERF), which is one of the leading regional think tanks of the Middle East region. The award is based on more than 20 years of my research contributions, reaching more than 90 publications in highly reputable journals and publications in economics and business research. (2021)
Moustafa Youssef, a professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, is ranked second in Research.com's list of top computer scientists in Egypt. He has made considerable strides in his research on employing mobile devices for location tracking technology — gaining recognition from top educational and scientific institutions, as well as major tech companies (2021).

2020 - 2021
Daria Mizza, assistant professor, Department of Educational Studies, won the thirty-sixth Kenneth W. Mildenberger Prize by the Modern Language Association of America (MLA) for 2021.
Maha Bali, associate professor of practice at the Center for Learning and Teaching, won the Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service from the Consortium of American Liberal Arts Institutions (AMICAL) outside the US in January 2021. The coordinating committee officers recognize the exceptional and sustained efforts Bali has made to support consortial goals and on behalf of AMICAL's member institutions and colleagues. In particular, they recognize Bali's contributions to committee work, community discussions, and event organizing, which stand out for her critical reflection, informed and relevant comments, and inclusiveness of spirit.
Sherif Kamel, dean and professor of management at the School of Business, received a certificate of recognition from the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD Global), Belgium, in January 2021 for his outstanding commitment and contribution to driving excellence in management education globally in his role of steering committee member for the EFMD Middle East and Africa conference amid the turbulence brought by the exceptional circumstances. In addition, Kamel won the Outstanding Achievement Award in December 2020 from the Association of Information Systems MENA chapter. The award is granted in recognition of the contribution to the information systems discipline.
Wael Mamdouh, associate professor of nanotechnology, Department of Chemistry, was selected as one of the winners of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Next Innovation with Japan (NINJA) Business Plan Competition 2021.
Haytham Nawar (AUC Press 2020) has won the Art History and Criticism category in the 2021 PROSE awards organized by the Association of American Publishers (AAP).
Tarek Selim, a professor at the Department of Economics, won the Lifetime Research Fellow Award from the Economic Research Forum (ERF) in 2021 based on his 20 years of research in economics, market analysis and business development, spanning more than 90 research publications.
Ashraf Sheta, visiting assistant professor, management department, won the second prize award for the Emerald-KCC case writing competition on February 3, 2021, from the Emerald Publishing - Khazindar Case Center. The award for case writing in the field of the family business.
Omar Abdelaziz, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, won the State Encouragement Award in Engineering Sciences 2019 for his multiple contributions to refrigeration and cooling/air conditioning. His research specifically addresses the conversion of industries to utilizing low global warming potential refrigerants that are energy-efficient and climate-friendly to reduce global warming and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Nageh Allam, professor of physics, Department of Physics, won the State Excellence Award in Advanced Technological Sciences 2019 for researching the design and fabrication of nanostructured materials for energy application. The winning research mainly focuses on using such materials to harvest sunlight and convert it directly into electricity (solar cells) or indirectly to split water and generate hydrogen for use as a clean fuel. Equally important is energy storage, which was the second part of the winning research.
Hassan Azzazy, professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry, won the State Prize in Science and Technology 2019, organized by The Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, for their scientific contributions and achievements. Azzazy has been acknowledged for his multiple contributions to chemistry. He has over 30 years of experience in biomedical research and is the founder of AUC's Novel Diagnostics and Therapeutics research group, which has been developing innovative diagnostics for accurate and affordable detection of biomarkers of cancer and infectious agents, including hepatitis C.
Reem Bassiouney, professor and chair Applied Linguistics department, won the Naguib Mahfouz Prize for literature. This award was given for her novel Sons of the People, The Mamluk Trilogy (2020).
Tarek El Domiaty, professor of finance, Department of Management, won the Outstanding Author Contribution at the 2020 Emerald Literati Awards for Excellence for the chapter Financial Decisions and Growth of the Firm under High and Low Levels of Information Asymmetry published in Research in Finance: Essays in Financial Economics. Over 25 years, the Emerald Literati Awards have celebrated and rewarded the outstanding contributions of authors. The papers nominated for the awards must be published in Emerald Journals. Eldomiaty’s paper offers new measures of information asymmetry. The paper examines the contribution of financial decisions to reduce information asymmetry, and eventually enhance the quality of financial decisions.
Kim Fox, professor of practice at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, was awarded the Best of Competition award in the International Faculty Audio category for her short-form audio piece, One Day in January 2011. This is the fourth consecutive year that Fox won a faculty audio award (2020).
Ali Hadi, distinguished university professor and chair of the Department of Mathematics and Actuarial Science, has been inducted as a fellow of The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) at the Annual General Assembly of the African Academy of Sciences (December 7-9, 2020, virtual). He was the only elected fellow in mathematical sciences. He was one of three Egyptian scientists inducted this year. The list of 224 fellows elected since 1985 indicates that Hadi is the first AAS Fellow in AUC’s history. The AAS fellowship recruitment follows a rigorous evaluation by the AAS Membership Advisory Committees (MACs) in various specializations.
Jamal Haidar, assistant professor of economics, Department of Economics, has been ranked by IDEAS-RePEc in December 2020 among the top 10 economists who completed their PhD in 2015. IDEAS-RePEc is run at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. In addition to his work at AUC's School of Business, Haidar is also currently a research associate at the Middle East Initiative at Harvard University.
Salima Ikram, a distinguished university professor at the Department of Sociology, Egyptology and Anthropology, has been awarded The Woolford B. Baker Service Award by the Michael C. Carlos Museum, Emory University, Atlanta, 2020. In addition, Ikram received The ACT Museo Liceo Egipcio Award in Egyptology Léon, Spain 2020, which recognizes contributions to the development of architecture at the international level
Tania Kamal-Eldin, associate professor of practice, Department of the Arts, won the Award Winner/Screenplay from Nature Without Borders International Film Festival on December 6, 2020. On November 20, 2020, Kamal-Eldin won the Official Selection from the Life Screenings International One Minute Film Festival. He also won the finalist for the short film Behind High Walls from the Africa Film For Impact Festival on October 1, 2020. In addition, on December 19, 2020, he won the Official Selection for Let Me Dance from the Short Cine Fest. Last but not least, Kamal-Eldin won the Semi-Finalist for the short film Let Me Dance at the Alternative Film Festival on July 1, 2020.
Noor Naga, instructor at the Department of Rhetoric and Composition, received the 2017 Bronwen Wallace Award, the 2019 RBC/PEN Canada Award, the 2019 Disquiet Fiction Prize, and the 2019 Graywolf Press Africa Prize (2020).
Shahira S. Fahmy, a professor, at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, received an award for competitive top faculty award (first place) at the most prestigious Journalism and Mass Communication academic conference in the United States(2020). The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) promotes the highest possible standards for journalism and mass communication education, to cultivate the widest possible range of communication research, to encourage the implementation of a multi-cultural society in the classroom and curriculum, and to defend and maintain freedom of communication in an effort to achieve better professional practice and a better-informed public. Fahmy also received The Deborah Gump Research Awardat the Champions of Editing Research Competitions of the AEJMC annual convention, USA & Top Paper Award (First place) at the Visual Communication Division of the AEJMC annual convention, USA (2021). In 2020, she received the Top Scholar to Scholar Award at the Visual Communication Division of the AEJMC annual convention in San Francisco, USA.
Bahia Shehab, professor of design at the Department of Arts, has been announced as a finalist for the Tällberg Eliasson Global Leadership Prize in October 2020. The Tällberg Eliasson Global Leadership Prize is given annually to women and men who demonstrate the kind of leadership demanded by the challenges of the 21st century: innovative, imaginative, flexible, systems-based, risk-taking, and, above all, ethical. The Tällberg Foundation convenes people with diverse and different minds, ideas, cultures, and perspectives searching for new, actionable solutions. In that sense, the foundation is more a platform than an organization with a constantly evolving network. She also won the Art History and Criticism category in the 2021 PROSE Awards organized by the Association of American Publishers (AAP) for her book A History of Arab Graphic Design by Bahia Shehab (AUC Press 2020).
Nermeen Shehata, associate professor at the Department of Accounting, has been awarded the Abdul Hameed Shoman Arab Researchers Award 2020 in the Economics and Administration Sciences category on the topic of Financial Solutions and Creative Innovations in Emerging Markets for her research on corporate governance and its impact on the development of capital markets, especially in emerging economies.
Helen Rizzo, associate professor and sociology unit head, Department of Sociology, Egyptology and Anthropology, won the 2020 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title award for her co-edited volume Gender in the Middle East and North Africa: Contemporary Issues and Challenges. Rizzo also received the Academic Service Award 2020-2021. She performed outstanding service to AUC and the wider community, and her efforts during her twenty years at AUC show that she has gone far beyond the ordinary requirements of faculty in the area of academic service. She is a worthy recipient of the Award for Excellence in Academic Service.
Ten faculty from the School of Sciences and Engineering have been recognized among the top two percent impactful scientists globally in a report issued by Stanford University. Using Elsevier’s abstract and citation database, called Scopus, the University compiled a list of over a million scientists from 149 different countries.

Tania Kamal-Eldin, associate professor of practice, Department of Arts, won the Award Winner/Short Film from the Mister Vorky Film Festival on May 31, 2020
Tarek Selim, professor of economics at the School of Business, won the Academy of Management Best Reviewer Award and Wooden Plaque (2020) from the Technology and Innovation (TIM ) Division of the Academy of Management. Annually, the Academy of Management presents awards to members and others to recognize outstanding contributions, professional accomplishments, and distinguished service, where awards are distinguished by the breadth and length of contribution.
Ashraf Sheta, visiting assistant professor of the Management Department, won the 2019 Case Writing Competition from the European Foundation for Management Development EFMD on June 2, 2020. The case revolves around Technology Park Company, a privately owned company operating in the IT field. Telling the entrepreneur's story, the case moves through a timeline that takes the readers on his success journey, including challenges, speed bumps, and family business-related concerns pertaining to the Egyptian context, such as succession, partner involvement, and separation of ownership and management.
Ibrahim Abotaleb, assistant professor at the Department of Construction Engineering, won the Thomas Fitch Rowland Prize from the American Society of Civil Engineers - Construction Institute 2020. The prize is awarded once a year by the Construction Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the oldest, largest, and most prestigious civil engineering society in the United States. The award is given to the authors of the highest quality journal paper after passing through a series of nominations and recommendations by the key academic community of construction engineering and management.
Mona Amer, associate professor and chair of the Department of Psychology, was one of two AUC faculty members out of 10 scholars nationwide who received a Scopus award on October 30, 2019. The awards were for the top researcher in 10 broad fields across the humanities, social sciences, sciences, engineering, and health, based on scholarly impact metrics (H-index, field-weighted citation impact, number of publications) over the five-year period of 2014 - 2018. Amer was honored with the award for Distinguished Contribution to Psychological Scholarship by the American Arab, Middle Eastern, and North African Psychological Association.
HossamEldin Attiah, a senior instructor of rhetoric and composition, received the Excellence in Teaching Award from Notting Hill College, the UK, based on his excellent evaluation.
Ibrahim Awad, professor of practice at the Department of Public Policy and Administration and director of the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies, was awarded the Officer Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, which honors Spanish and foreign personalities who have worked to strengthen Spain's relations with the international community.
John Baboukis, professor of music at the Department of the Arts, has been awarded an honorable mention for the American Prize in Composition in the orchestral category for his Symphony for Cairo. The competition included thirty semi-finalists, twenty-six finalists, and ten honorable mentions. The competitions of The American Prize are open to all US citizens, whether living in the US or abroad, and to others currently living, working, and/or studying in the United States of America.
Laila El Baradei, professor at the Department of Public Policy and Administration, received The 2019 Inaugural Distinguished Achievements and Leadership and Public Administration Scholarship or Practice in the Middle East Award from the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA)’s Section on Effective and Sound Administration in the Middle East (SESAME).
Reem Bassiouney, professor at the Department of Applied Linguistics, won the Supreme Council of Culture's prestigious Naguib Mahfouz Award for best Egyptian novel for her best-selling book, Sons of the People: The Mamluk Trilogy. Her novel remained on the bestseller lists of the 2019 and 2020 Cairo Book Fair. The novel recounts the story of a Mamluk ruler who chooses a bride from a middle-class Egyptian family. Bassiouny is the first woman to receive the Naguib Mahfouz prize. In addition, she won the Naguib Mahfouz Award for Literature from the Supreme Council for Culture (2020). This is the highest award for literature awarded in Egypt.
Teklu Bekele, associate professor at the Department of International and Comparative Education, is the winner of the 2019 Outstanding Author Contribution Literati award, by Emerald Publishing, for his published work on context analysis.
Catarina Belo, associate professor at the Department of Philosophy, received a 2019 Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation in December 2019. The award was in recognition of the excellence of her translations of several medieval Arabic and Islamic philosophical texts from Arabic into Portuguese.
Nabil Fahmy, Egypt's former Foreign Affairs minister and Founding Dean of the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, The Japanese Government Bestows with Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun of the First Degree. The conferment ceremony was held in November 2019. Fahmy was granted the prestigious decoration conferred by His Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan. This decoration is awarded to those who have advanced their fields, made significant achievements in international relations or the promotion of Japanese culture, or contributed to development in welfare or conservation.
Shahira S. Fahmy, professor at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, received The Top Scholar to Scholar Award for the best visual communication division paper at the AEJMC annual convention in Toronto, Canada (2019).
Kim Fox, professor of practice at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, has been announced as the recipient of two BEA Festival of Media Arts awards as executive producer for the Ehky Ya Masr Podcast.

Noura Wahby, assistant professor at the Department of Public Policy and Administration, won the Malcolm H. Kerr Dissertation Award from the Middle East Studies Association (2019). Wahby's thesis on regimes of governance in Cairo's urban water systems is a masterful example of theoretically rich, methodologically sophisticated, interdisciplinary research that is solidly grounded in painstaking fieldwork. Wahby's work sheds crucial light on urban water politics as a site of negotiation, accumulation by dispossession, and protest.
