Emotional Social Intelligence: Confidence and Connection for Success

Students on campus having a conversation

Adolescence is an exciting time. So much is changing internally, externally, with others, priorities, pressures of school, and what lies ahead.

With the growth of social media platforms, these challenges take new forms while the gap between younger and older generations expands. Challenges also bring possibility! Current research indicates that Social Emotional Learning (SEL) improves academic performance by 11%, along with self-confidence levels, the ability to set appropriate goals, make informed decisions, resolve conflicts, and manage emotions, including stress and anxiety.

SEL provides students with core skills and capacities essential to walking through their days centered, confident, and connected, including:

  • Self-Awareness: Recognizing emotions and associated thoughts, accurately assessing strengths and vulnerabilities, and being consciously centered and confident.
  • Self-Management: Regulating emotions, thoughts, and behaviors -- such as managing stress, controlling impulses, asking for support, and setting/achieving goals that inspire.
  • Social Awareness: Enjoying positive connections with diverse types of people through an awareness of non-verbal communication, active listening, and generative communication.
  • Social Management: Making appropriate choices based on accurate assessment of consequences and decisions that generate safety, respect, and positivity.

This course will not only support adolescents in dealing with their current challenges, but it will also help in setting them up to enjoy a happier, healthier, and more successful life.
