The Tomorrow’s Leaders Gender Scholars (TLS) Program is a joint effort between the Department of State, the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs (NEA/AC) and The American University in Cairo (AUC). The program provides full-tuition scholarships and multiple training opportunities for undergraduate students. It aims to empower students to become gender-sensitive, civic- minded citizens and to acquire academic knowledge, research and leadership skills to advocate for policy reform and action in accordance with the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and the Gender Equity and Equality Action (GEEA) Fund.

TLS program is also mandated to support AUC gender mainstreaming goals and activities. For more information on the TLS Program, watch the video below:

Kurrasat TLS

Kurrasat TLS showcases the programs' student research output including research published by international peer-reviewed journals as well as TLS student generated gender-relevant content.

TLS/TLP Alumni Network

Launched in fall 2023, the TLS/TLP alumni network provides networking, professional development and training opportunities to graduates of the programs.

Admissions

  • A current undergraduate student. (students may be from Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, Yemen, and West Bank and Gaza.)

  • Enrolled at AUC on a full-time basis

  • Must be at least a sophomore at the time of application

  • Must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0

  • A current recipient of AUC financial aid

  • Must demonstrate leadership potential through active engagement in extracurricular activities or community service

Students enrolled in the program will receive: 

  • Full tuition fees for up to two semesters

  • Training and mentorship in gender and relevant internship opportunities

  • Leadership, career and soft/entrepreneurial skills training 

  • Academic advising and faculty mentoring

In addition, TLS students will be eligible to benefit from some of the opportunities offered to Tomorrow's Leaders students and alumni.

  • Maintain a CGPA of 3.0 and above

  • Register in at least one gender course each semester

  • Commit not to drop/fail the registered gender courses. Dropping from the courses would mean immediate cancelation of the scholarship

  • Attend TLS-organized workshops, seminars, round tables, and forum discussions

  • Submit one research paper relevant to the field of gender studies, WPS Agenda and GEEA priorities

  • Participate in at least one activity per semester to advocate for gender equality

  • Participate in the Tomorrow’s Leaders Symposium

Application is now open on Banner Self-Service.

  • Filled application on Banner Self-Service
  • Two recent recommendation letters (not more than a year old)
  • An up-to-date resume
  • A full screenshot of an updated Degree Works Profile
  • Student’s Transcript (a PDF of the unofficial transcript obtained from Banner Self-Service is sufficient)
  • Eligible students only will be emailed and prompted to apply
  • Students must submit a complete application on Banner Self-service to move forward to the academic review process. 
  • Students whose applications move to the bootcamp process are expected to attend in person. 
  • Students who move to the interview phase are also expected to be there in person.
  • Online arrangements for either phase cannot be made. Dates change every year depending on the volume of received application.
