Students Rights and Responsibilities

As a student financial aid recipient, you have a number of rights and responsibilities.

As a student financial aid recipient, it is your responsibility to:

1. Apply, complete and submit the FAFSA. Re-apply every year in order to be considered for financial aid.
2. Confirm that the information reported on your aid application is correct and complete. Reporting false information is a violation of the law and may be considered a criminal offense.
3. Notify the FA office if you are incarcerated during any term in which you are receiving financial aid.
4. If, after filling your FAFSA, you are convicted of possessing or selling drugs, notify FAO immediately.
5. Read, understand, and keep copies of all forms you sign or submit.
6. Know and comply with the rules governing the financial aid you receive. You must maintain your eligibility. These rules include:

• Be a US citizen or eligible non-citizen.
• Be appropriately admitted and work toward a degree program at AUC.
• Not be in default on any prior federal student loan.
• Not owe a refund on a federal grant.
• Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

1. Provide additional documentation, federal tax returns, W-2’s, and any other information, if requested by AUC.
2. Notify the AUC FA office immediately if you receive sources of student financial aid (scholarship, private loans, etc.) which are not listed on your award notice, or are listed with different amounts.
3. Comply with the provision of any promissory note and all other agreements you sign.
4. Know and register for the required number of eligible hours to receive your financial aid. You will be billed for aid adjustments caused by changes in enrollment status.
5. Notify the Registrar’s Office if you withdraw from the University.
6. Notify the FAO if you have been awarded financial aid for a semester in which you do not plan to enroll.
7. Know the implications of dropping a course (withdrawing) or dropping all of your courses at AUC. This will have an effect on your student financial aid.
8. Repay AUC for any funds for which you are no longer eligible; i.e., funds that exceed the Cost of Attendance (COA), funds that were awarded erroneously, or funds you received and failed to maintain eligibility for.
9. Repay AUC for any financial aid funds disbursed to you in error. If a mistake was made, whether by yourself, AUC FAO, or another agency, federal regulations require that the mistake be corrected and funds be billed back as necessary.
10. Notify your lender should any of the following occur before your loan is repaid:
    1. You change your address and/or phone number
    2. You graduate
    3. You withdraw from school or are enrolled less than halftime
    4. You change your name (e.g., maiden name to married name)
    5. You transfer to another university
11. Keep your local, permanent and email addresses current with the AUC Registrar’s Office.
12. Respond promptly to all requests from the FAO for additional information. If you do not respond you may be billed for a portion or all of the financial aid disbursed to you.

As a student financial aid recipient, you have the right to:

1. Know the correct procedures for applying for student financial aid, your Cost of Attendance (COA) and the types of financial aid available.
2. Know how financial need is determined (COA), what the criteria are for awarding financial aid, how academic progress is determined (SAP), and what you have to do to continue receiving financial aid.
3. Know the type and amount of financial aid you will receive, how much of your financial aid need has been met, and how and when your financial aid will be disbursed.
4. Ensure that the files associated with your student financial aid file are in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
5. Know the conditions of any loan you accept.
