Brief Biography

1930 - born in Egypt
1965 - assistant professor at Dar al-‘Ulum
1970 - tenured at AUC as Assistant Professor of Arabic Literature
1972 - associate professor
1976  - Full professor
1987-1989, 1991-1995 - Director of Center for Arabic Studies
1991 - onwards Member of the National Supreme Council for Culture
1992-2006 - Director of the Arabic Studies Research Unit;
2003 - Emeritus Professor

Recipient of international awards, including the King Faisal International Prize in Arabic Literature for my book on al-‘Aqqad in 1995 and the Modern Language Association of America Prize for a Distinguished Bibliography, 2002.
