Brief Biography

A senior II Arabic Language Instructor at the Department of Arabic Language Instruction, at the American University in Cairo. She just completed her tenure as the Executive Director of Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA@AUC) and Center for Advanced Arabic Study in Cairo (CAASIC) program 2017 - 2024. 
Heba Studied Mass Communications and Psychology as an undergraduate at AUC then completed a Master's degree in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL), also at AUC. She also taught various levels of Egyptian Colloquial Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic at AUC and other universities in the US; the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Maryland, and Middlebury College.
Salem has created and taught both content courses and courses based on skills, as well as Media Arabic. Her most famous course is the course about the city of Cairo called: Cario, the City of the 1001 Faces. Heba coauthored Umm al-Dunya, the advanced Egyptian Colloquial Arabic textbook, AUC Press 2012. Salem carried out teacher training workshops for different audiences. She is interested in translation, writing, speech analysis, and how language is used to affect meaning in general.
