Sungsoo Chun

Brief Biography

Sungsoo Chun is a Professor at the Institute of Global Health and Human Ecology (IGHHE) at The American University in Cairo (AUC). He earned his BS in Pharmacy from Sahmyook University and his MPH and PhD in public health from Seoul National University in Korea. Following his PhD, he was a visiting scholar for the Harvard College Alcohol Study at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Prior to joining AUC, Chun worked with various academic institutions and developmental organizations, including international Non Profit Organisations (NGOs) and the United Nations. He served as a professor and dean of the Graduate School at Sahmyook University, dean of the Graduate School of Health Science and Welfare, director of the Center for Addiction Science Specialties, and director of the Korean Institute of Alcohol Problems. He has conducted international comparative research in numerous countries, such as the US, UK, Canada, Sweden, Scotland, Ireland, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, New Zealand, Ecuador, Kuwait, and Pakistan. He currently represents the International Alcohol Control Study (IAC) in his country and serves as the executive director of the Global Supercentenarian Cohort Network Study. He has also been an advisor to the World Health Organization and, for the past four years, a Policy Adviser in Health for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kuwait.

Chun has received several honors, including being named an outstanding faculty member by Sahmyook University in 2002. He was also recognized as one of the "33 Men of Ability in Modern Korea" by the Korean Research Institute of Men of Ability in 2009 and one of the "100 Hope Givers" by NewsPeople in 2009. In his teaching, professional contributions, and research, he focuses on the intersection of health and medical sciences with policy, health analytics, health promotion, and global health governance and development.
