AUC Begins Online Instruction Today

The American University in Cairo (AUC) begins today online instruction for students for two weeks. The move to online instruction comes as one of several precautionary measures that AUC is taking in an effort to help limit the spread of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

Associate Provost for Transformative Learning and Teaching Aziza Ellozy '64, '67, said that AUC started training faculty on online instruction earlier this month. “We have a unique resource at AUC, which is the Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT). The center was established about 17 years ago and has become not only regionally but internationally known for its expertise in faculty development, providing them with support for pedagogy, assessment and digital education.”

CLT has been conducting training for faculty members in online instruction and tools, and continues to provide all the available support to faculty to ensure a smooth shift to online instruction. CLT has also prepared a guideline for faculty on AUC’s website.

AUC Provost Ehab Abdel-Rahman communicated earlier with students and faculty that while classes and assignments will resume beginning today (via online instruction), no exams or graded quizzes are to be conducted during the two weeks of online instruction.

El Lozy shared how the move to online instruction is difficult for everybody, yet she sees it as an opportunity for everyone.  “I'm sure we will be up to the challenge. And I think everybody should take it as a learning opportunity that would help us in the future.”

Last week, AUC moved the Spring Break forward, beginning March 15 for one week. The week-long academic spring break was an opportunity to hone the preparations to shift all possible instruction to online formats, and to develop policies, technologies, and procedures to test new remote work arrangements. As a result, all AUC staff will work remotely, except when the nature of their job is both critical to the operation and can only be done on campus.
