AUC Celebrates Faculty Excellence
The American University in Cairo (AUC) held a celebration last week to honor more than 50 of its award-winning faculty. The in-person event recognized the work of the outstanding faculty who have received awards, accolades and national and international recognition in recent years. AUC President Ahmad Dallal said: "It gives me great pleasure to recognize the distinguished faculty members with us today for their remarkable national and international achievements.” Addressing the faculty, Dallal added: “The work you do spans so many disciplines and fields of research, but the common denominator shared among all of you is your pursuit of excellence. Thank you for making us proud and for setting an example of the very best of AUC."
Among the most recent awardees in 2022 and 2021 were Amr Adly, assistant professor, Department of Political Science; Jamal Haidar, assistant professor of economics, Department of Economics; Daria Mizza, assistant professor, Department of Educational Studies; Maha Bali, associate professor of practice, the Center for Learning and Teaching, Kim Fox, professor of practice, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and Sherif Kamel, dean and professor of management, the School of Business.
The awardees also included Wael Mamdouh, associate professor of nanotechnology, Department of Chemistry; Bahia Shehab, professor of design, Department of Arts; Haytham Nawar, associate professor and chair of the Department of Arts; Tarek Selim, professor, Department of Economics; Ashraf Sheta, visiting assistant professor, Department of Management and Ibrahim Awad, professor of practice in the Department of Public Policy and Administration and director of the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies.
Mohamed Salama, associate professor, Institute of Global Health and Human Ecology (I-GHHE), who received The SOT Arab Toxicologists Association SIG Outstanding Professional Award 2022 said: "It is very nice to have our University celebrate our achievements. We still need to feel appreciated in our own home even if we receive national or international awards. We look forward to having more of such celebrations."
"It is highly appreciated to be recognized by AUC," said Nelly Hanna, distinguished professor, department of Arab and Islamic civilizations, who was honored as "Historian of the Year" in Tunisia in November 2019 at the annual conference held by the Tunisian Mediterranean Association in Monastir.
AUC also recognized nine faculty members from the School of Sciences and Engineering, who have been included in Elsevier's 2021 top 2% list for the second year in a row for their research output and its impact. The AUC faculty included on the list are Amal Esawi, professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering; Ezzeldine Sayed Ahmed, professor, Department of Construction and Hassan Azzazy, distinguished university professor, Department of Chemistry, who won the State Prize awardee in Science and Technology 2019. The list also includes Maki Habib, professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering; Mohamed Farag, professor, Department of Chemistry; Tamer Elbatt, professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering; Yehea Ismail, professor, Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering; Moustafa Youssef, professor, Department of Computer Science Engineering; Nageh Allam, professor, Department of Physics and Moustafa Youssef, professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
"It is very moving that AUC recognizes the work of its faculty members. It makes a lot of difference and provides the faculty with more passion for the work they do,” said Reem Bassiouney, professor, department of applied linguistics, who won the Supreme Council of Culture's prestigious Naguib Mahfouz Award for best Egyptian novel for her best-selling book, Sons of the People: The Mamluk Trilogy. Bassiouney is the first woman to receive the Naguib Mahfouz prize.
