AUC Welcomes New University Counselor Tarek Shawki

The American University in Cairo (AUC) welcomes the appointment of Tarek Shawki, former Minister of Education and Technical Education, as the new University Counselor. Shawki succeeds Mohamed Hamza, who has been AUC’s Counselor since December 2021. “Dr. Shawki is a distinguished member of our community with a long-standing history at AUC,” said AUC President Ahmad Dallal, “A member of AUC’s senior leadership group, Dr. Shawki serves a critical role in maintaining our collaborative relationships with national universities, the Supreme Council of Universities and the Egyptian Government.”

Internationally recognized for his efforts to re-imagine classical education systems, Shawki has a long career in leading educational and cultural institutions. Shawki was dean of AUC’s School of Sciences and Engineering from 2012 to 2015 and was a Senior Strategic Advisor to the AUC President for Education and Outreach. He also served as director of the Regional UNESCO Bureau for Science and Technology in Arab States from 2008 to 2012 and Secretary General of the Presidential Specialized Councils from 2015 to 2017. He is renowned for his theoretical and applied mechanics work and has taught various engineering and applied mathematics courses for decades.

Shawki holds a Ph.D. in engineering and master’s degrees in solid mechanics and applied mathematics from Brown University and a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Cairo University.
