AUC athletes won first place and a total of 81 medals in the 11th All Africa University Games held last week in Lagos, Nigeria competing against 70 universities from 35 African countries.
AUC students won 46 gold, 27 silver and eight bronze medals. “We are immensely proud of our students for their outstanding achievement in the All Africa University Games," said Sharif Erian, senior director of athletics. "This victory marks our second win, following our first-place finish at the 10th All Africa University Games in Kenya two years ago, and it highlights the students' hard work, dedication and spirit. This achievement is a celebration not only of athletic excellence but also of the vibrant community at AUC that supports our athletes every step of the way."
The 28-member team achieved medals in judo, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, swimming, chess and karate. AUC’s swimming teams secured an impressive number of medals: 39 gold, 28 silver and seven bronze. Additionally, this championship marked AUC's first international participation in karate, where the team secured its first gold medal, representing a significant milestone for AUC athletics.
AUC participated twice in the All Africa University Games. The first was in Nairobi, Kenya in 2022, where the students finished in first, winning a total of 68 medals: 29 gold, 22 silver and 18 bronze. In that edition, the University emerged as the overall champion, contributing to Egypt’s top position in the country’s medal standing. This year, AUC returned to compete in Lagos, Nigeria, competing in the 2024 games organized under the auspices of the Federation of the African University Sports (FASU).
The All Africa University Games, also known as FASU Games, is a premier continental multi-sport event organized by FASU every two years. The games were first held in 1975 in Accra, Ghana.
