RCC Opening Ceremony: Healthy Aging in Egypt Panel Discussion
AL-SEHA (A Longitudinal Study of Egyptian Healthy Aging) is a 2.6 million USD five-year project supported from the National Institute of Health in the US. The project will provide researchers and policy-makers with an unprecedented opportunity to better understand the nature of complex interactions among social, economic, biological, and environmental factors affecting aging in Egypt. The project entails the first nationally representative study of aging to be conducted in Egypt which fills a knowledge gap about the older Egyptian population. The project principle investigator is Mohamed Salama, professor, AUC Institute of Global Health and Human Ecology and Hoda Rashad, the co-principle investigator, professor and director of the Social Research Center, AUC.

Salama obtained his medical degree in 1999 from Mansoura University, where he began his clinical training. He received his MSc in Toxicology in 2006 and his PhD degree in Neurotoxicology in 2011 through collaboration with Philipps University in Marburg, Germany. Upon returning to Egypt, he established the first Translational Neuroscience Unit in Egypt. Salama's collaborative research led to the establishment of the Egyptian Network for Neurodegenerative Disorders (ENND). He was selected as a SOT Global Senior Scholar in 2013 and a translational/bridging awardee in 2016. He was awarded by Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Foundation (PMDF) for his continuing research in the field of neurodegeneration.
Hoda Rashad

Professor and director of the Social Research Center, AUC
Rashad holds a doctorate in population studies from the University of London. She previously served as chief technical advisor of the United Nations, and associate of the International Population Council. She serves as a member of a number of national and international organizations, such as the Policy Advisory Group of WHO international report on ‘Social Determinants of Health Equity; the Eastern Mediterranean WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health; the WHO Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity; and the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health. In Egypt, Rashad served as a member of a number of significant national entities such as the National Council for Women; the Shura Council, and the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology.

Dina Makram-Ebeid
Assistant Professor of Sociology
Ebeid graduated from The American University in Cairo with a degree in economics in 2005. She received her MSc in anthropology and development studies from the London School of Economics in the UK in 2007, followed by her PhD in social anthropology in 2013. Her research and teaching interests include economic sociology, the sociology of work and labor, gender-based violence and gender justice movements, class dynamics and social mobility and social protection policies. She conducted extensive fieldwork with different social groups in Egypt with a focus on inequality and social change.
