Translation - Minor

Program Overview 

The Minor in Translation is a practice-oriented program that focuses on how language and translation can be applied to real life situations to enable students to become professionals in a range of in-demand fields.

The topics covered by the courses in this program include-but are not limited to translation theory, technology-mediated translation, translation of professional documents, language and communication, and language and society.

The program aims to enhance the translation skills of students. Students will learn about different translation methods, and practice translation techniques throughout. They also learn to utilize their linguistic skills to become better translators, through hands-on translation activities and encounters with practitioners in the field.  

The program gives students a solid grounding in linguistics and translation. Graduates of this program will be equipped to become professionals in growing fields such as translation, publishing, media, politics, international projects and more.

Honors Program in Political Science - BA

Program Overview

Political Science's honors program is a crucial part of the department's academic life, and a capstone experience allowing students to conclude their time at AUC by working one-on-one with a department member. Honors students will take small, closed-enrollment classes together in the Fall semester of their senior year. In the Spring semester of their senior year, honors students will complete research under the supervision of an adviser of their choice (subject to availability), preparing themselves for post-graduate employment or further study.

Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (TESOL) - Diploma

Program Overview

The diploma program is designed for qualified teachers of English who meet the same admission requirements as those for the Master of Arts degree. A diploma requires completion of a total of six courses and full-time students can finish it in one year.

Students come from a variety of backgrounds. It is designed for those with or without previous teaching experience and whose English language proficiency is adequate for graduate work and teaching the language at various levels.

Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (TESOL) - MA

Program Overview

The Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (M.A. TESOL) program prepares superior teachers of English as a second language. Our program offers cutting-edge approaches, methodologies and pedagogical knowledge to advance an English teaching career. Since its inception in 1966, the MA TESOL program has been serving AUC, Egypt, and the Middle East at large through educating qualified language professionals who can competently work in different instructional settings across the world. Historically, we have had a diverse group of students from both native and non-native English-speaking countries. 

The program offers opportunities to observe and engage in language teaching. The program aims to develop leadership skills, create teachers and administrators who are lifelong learners, and encourage student participation in research-based inquiry to advance new knowledge in the discipline.

Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL) - Diploma

Program Overview

The TAFL diploma is designed for students that want a less comprehensive program from the MA Program in TAFL and those who already possess Arabic teaching qualifications and are only seeking professional development.  Interested students must meet the same admission requirements as candidates for the master’s degree. It is awarded to those who successfully complete 18 credit hours by taking specific TAFL courses.

Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL) - MA

Program Overview

AUC Master of Arts in teaching Arabic as a foreign language (TAFL) is a distinctive degree program with few counterparts in other American Universities. The master’s degree consists of either 30 credit hours and a thesis or 36 credit hours and a written and oral comprehensive exam. Required courses cover the following topics: principles of linguistic analysis, second language acquisition, methods of teaching a foreign language focusing on Arabic, sociolinguistics, methods of research, and challenges facing Arabic as a foreign/second language teachers. In addition, the program also offers electives that focus on specific aspects of Arabic language and language teaching like: language variation, material development, teaching culture and intercultural competence, assessment, teaching the various language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), and pragmatics.
