Faculty Institute of Learning and Teaching Receives International Accreditation
The Center for Learning and Teaching recently received accreditation for its Faculty Institute of Learning and Teaching (ILT) program from the Educational Developers Caucus (EDC), a body in Canada that accredits faculty development programs, part of the Society of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.
The Faculty Institute of Learning and Teaching (ILT) is a yearlong immersive professional development experience for new faculty, which aims to create a learning community for AUC faculty, to cultivate a cultural shift towards innovative teaching and foster quality learning and teaching at AUC.
In the 2018 - 2019 pilot, 11 faculty completed the Faculty ILT. Among their feedback on the program:
"Two important things to highlight were the mindset of learning coined with the tools and techniques for teaching. Collegial support and faculty group discussions were other key issues in the ILT, by which one learned about different techniques used between disciplines and can be applied in another discipline." - Momen El Husseiny, ARCH
"I very much enjoyed discussing and contemplating materials and technologies with my colleagues in a consequence-free environment." - Julie Herrick, RHET
The Faculty ILT was designed with adult learning principles in mind, focusing on individual and group reflection, as well as offering space for faculty to have some flexibility within the cohort of what and how they would be learning, taking inspiration from faculty learning communities in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The fall 2019 - 2020 cohort is focused on new faculty, who have been strongly encouraged to participate. The accreditation is renewable after five years.
