Academic Advising for Non-Degree International Students

The International Programs and Services Office (IPSO) is responsible for completing academic advising and course registration for incoming non-degree international students who are enrolled in regular AUC courses. If you are enrolled in one of the Arabic Language Intensive programs, the Department of Arabic Language Instruction completes course registration on your behalf pending results of your language placement exam.

Course Load

Undergraduate students must enroll in 12-15 credit hours and graduate students must enroll in 9 credits.

The summer session includes a six-week period and two accelerated three-week periods. The maximum load for summer enrollment is six credit hours (two courses). Students can take two courses from the six-week session or one course from three-week session (A) and/or one course from three-week session (B). You can not combine courses from the six-week and three-week sessions. 

The maximum load for winter enrollment is three credit hours (one course). 

Course Overload

In fall and spring semesters, undergraduate students can take a maximum of 18 and graduate students a maximum of 12 credit hours, with the approval of the Office of the University Registrar. If students are studying abroad on tuition exchange, both AUC and home universities must approve course overloads and students may be responsible for paying these extra credits. 

Course Eligibility

Pending prerequisites, you are eligible to enroll in courses at the 1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000 level. If you are an upper-level student, you may be eligible for select 5100-level courses and up to one 5200-level course (excluding business) pending departmental approval. Click here for details. 

You must take a full course load of 5000 or 6000 graduate-level courses; the only exception to this is including one three-credit Arabic language class into your course load.

Undergraduate and Graduate Students: You can include Arabic language courses for credit in your schedule but cannot audit Arabic classes. Look for courses with the prefix "ALNG" only (not "ALIN" or "ALIS"), which are designed to be taken alongside content courses taught in English. For more details, click here. 

Course Planning

At the start of the advising period each term (generally mid-November for spring and mid-April for fall), AUC courses are posted on the Dynamic Schedule. In the meantime, you can review the previous fall or spring semester schedule for a tentative list of course offerings. 

View a corresponding course description in the AUC course catalog. Most course descriptions indicate the semester that each course is usually offered, but this information is subject to change and some courses are not taught every year. Course Registration

The Office of International Programs and Services (IPSO) completes undergraduate course registration on behalf of students during the registration period each term. You will have one more chance to register and/or make changes to your schedule during the late registration (drop/add) period during the first week of classes. 

Graduate registration takes place in person during orientation each term. 

How to Submit Your Course Preferences (PCP Form) 

Upon admittance to AUC and creation of your AUC email address, submit your Preliminary Course Planning (PCP) form to the International Programs and Services Office (IPSO) based on the posted dynamic schedule of courses. Enrollment cannot be guaranteed so the sooner you submit the PCP, the greater your chance of enrolling in your top choices. 

Undergraduate Students: For fall and spring semesters, it is mandatory to fill in five main courses and at least three alternate courses, in order of preference. If you wish to take four courses only, email [email protected]. For the summer, fill in two main courses and two alternate courses. 

Graduate Students: For fall and spring semesters, it is mandatory to fill in three main courses and at least two alternate courses, in order of preference. For the summer, fill in two main courses and two alternate courses.

Important Notes for the PCP Form

Class Timings: Make sure there are no time conflicts between classes. The academic week in Cairo is Sunday - Thursday, with a “study day” on Tuesdays. Most classes meet on Sunday and Wednesday or Monday and Thursday. 5000-level courses and special seminars meet once per week.   

Courses with "For Majors or Minors Only" Note: On the dynamic class schedule, some courses may note "For Majors Only" or "For Minors Only", which is intended for degree-seeking students only. As non-degree students, you can still enroll in these courses if you meet the prerequisite(s) though they may fill up quickly. 

Prerequisites: When you select a course on the PCP form, the AUC prerequisite(s) will automatically show up on the form. Review the prerequisite(s) for the courses in the AUC catalog and write in the name of the course(s) you have already taken that is the best match.

Arabic Courses: If you have a background in the language, fill out the Arabic background form so the Arabic department can reach out to administer an online placement exam. If you have no previous background, list the elementary level of the course.
