AUC Community Service Leaders Visit Cancer Hospital in Luxor

On Saturday October 26th, 8 leaders of the community service clubs, accompanied by their advisor, went on a one day trip to Shefaa’ Al-Orman Cancer Hospital in Luxor. The trip was organized by Al-Orman Organization. The aim of the trip was to give exposure to the students on the process of charity. The students were able to see how community service takes place outside of campus and how hard work and cooperation can result in an impactful result in serving the less fortunate in Egypt. The hospital has advanced technology in dealing with cancer, as well as a high level of hygiene and sanitation.

AUC Hosts Fourth MENA Social Policy Conference

In collaboration with the British Council in Egypt, and as part of the American University in Cairo’s (AUC) centennial celebration, the Middle East and North African Social Policy Network (MENASP Network) organized its 4th edition conference in Cairo, Egypt titled “Social Policy in the MENA Region: Policy Learning in the Era of Social Protection” on October 30 and 31 at AUC New Cairo. The opening session of the conference was attended by the Egyptian Minister of Health and Population, Dr Hala Zaid.

Using the 'Power of Design' to Shape the Future of Architecture and Autism

In 2002, Magda Mostafa, associate professor in the Department of Architecture, was approached by a group of parents to design Egypt’s first educational center for autism. She was eager to get to work, certain it would be easy with all the guidelines and research she’d find on how to design for individuals with autism. But to her surprise, she found “absolutely nothing.” No architect, she said, in Egypt or anywhere around the world had ever looked through and structured evidence-based methodology into this topic.
