Safe Campus Culture Working Group
Background
The American University in Cairo is deeply committed to a safe campus culture that embodies the values of respect, diversity, inclusion and equity. This academic year, the University worked to strengthen its policy, infrastructure and awareness of sexual harassment both on and off-campus through the AUC SpeakUp initiative, the establishment of the Office of Institutional Equity and the introduction of mandatory training. To build on this momentum and broaden its scope to our institutional culture, we need community participation to chart a road map for the future.
Mandate
The Safe Campus Culture Working Group is responsible for providing recommendations on how AUC can ensure an enduring and sustained commitment to a campus culture that provides a safe space for learning, teaching and working for all members of the community. The emphasis should be on permanent ways to shape and ingrain these shared values into our institutional culture. The working group must seek and aggregate input from members of the AUC community — through a range of mechanisms and conversations — in developing the recommendations and plan of action.
Specifically, the working group will:
- Suggest a definition of a “Safe Campus Culture” and the values and behaviors it encompasses.
- Provide a set of recommendations for how the University can instill and foster these shared values among all members of the AUC community. The recommendations should be sorted in order of priority or urgency.
- Propose mechanisms, action plans, or permanent bodies or structures, as appropriate, to achieve the recommendations.
Working Group Member Selection
All members of the AUC Community may either volunteer or be nominated to serve on the working group. The members of the working group will be announced to the AUC community and listed on this page.
The working group will consist of four faculty members, three students (two undergraduate and one graduate), and three staff members.
Volunteer or nominate someone for the workgroup

The working group submitted its final report with recommendations to the President of the University by January 2022.
