Apply to Study Abroad

Studying abroad can be transformational for students. To ensure AUC students will have successful experience, the criteria below are required to study abroad. 

1. The student must be in good academic standing. Students placed on probation of any form will not be eligible. Good academic standing is identified as follows:
   1. 2.8 GPA

Note: some host universities have a higher GPA requirement. Students are responsible for ensuring they meet their host universities GPA requirement before completing the IPSO Study Abroad application. 

2. The student must have completed a minimum of 24 credits by the time they participate in their study abroad experience. 
3. The major declaration must be completed.
4. All students must complete the following freshmen-level core curriculum requirements:
   1. RHET 110/1010 - Analytical and Persuasive Writing (3 credits) and CORE 110/1010
   2. RHET 120/1020 - Research Writing (3 credits)
5. Students are not eligible to apply if it will be the last semester at AUC.
6. Students on disciplinary probation (found to have committed conduct or academic integrity violations in the semester of applying for study abroad) are not eligible to apply. If they have already applied, their acceptances will be rescinded. If they have been nominated as exchange students, the partner institutions will be notified of their withdrawal.

Students are also responsible for meeting the eligibility criteria of their host university. 

Students are required to complete the Transfer Course Approval Form to be sent by the Office of the University Registrar.

The purpose of this form is so that students can receive confirmation that the courses they plan to enroll in at their host university will transfer to AUC. 

Steps on Completing the Transfer Course Approval Form: 

1. Students are only eligible to complete the form if they have been placed at a university and confirmed their acceptance with the International Programs and Services Office (IPSO). 
2. Students can only list courses from the most relevant, updated course catalog for the intended semester of study (example: if students are studying abroad for the spring 2025 semester, the courses listed for approval must from the spring 2025 course list).
3. The number of courses students can list on the course is 10. 
4. If the pre-approved courses from the registrar’s office are no longer available by the time you register at your host university, you can submit another updated form to the registrar’s office. It is recommended students complete this form as soon as possible so as to avoid any delays or issues with transferring courses 

Carefully review below information on registering for courses at your host university and how study abroad course credit transferring works:

• As part of AUC’s exchange agreements with its partner universities, AUC exchange undergraduate students must enroll in 15 US credits and AUC graduate students in 9 US credits.
• The transfer of credits from the host university is only granted to courses with a minimum final grade of “C” or an equivalent grade evaluated by AUC. 
• Courses that are graded by host university as “Pass” or “Credit” are not transferable to AUC. Students must receive a letter grade from their host university for each course the take. 
• Transferred credits from a student’s host university are added to their earned hours, but the grades they receive will not be calculated into the computation of their AUC GPA. 
• Repeated or cross-listed courses from another university are not transferrable to AUC. 

Students that decide to defer or cancel their participation in a study abroad exchange program must acknowledge the following:

• They are required to complete the Deferral/Cancellation form no later than a week before AUC’s classes start. Failure to do so will result in AUC tuition charges (for students on exchange) and dropping any registered AUC classes in Banner. 
  • For students on exchange, once IPSO receives their cancellation/defer confirmation via the form above, IPSO will contact AUC’s Registrar’s office, Accounting office, Student Financial Affairs and Scholarships, and the partner university.
  • For students direct-enrolling, once IPSO receives their cancellation/defer confirmation via the form above, IPSO will contact the relevant offices mentioned above, but the student is responsible for contacting their host university. 
• Students on exchange programs can only defer their participation for up to one semester at the same university (if the partnership between AUC and the host university is still valid and active). 
• If students cancel their participation, but still want to participate in a study abroad program later, they must reapply during the next available application cycle.
• Refunds of AUC tuition or student fees from either AUC or their host university are not applicable if students do not complete their semester abroad.
   

After the application cycle closes, IPSO will contact students with their placements. 

Students that accept their placement via signing the Study Abroad Agreement form will be added to IPSO’s Study Abroad Canvas course. 

This non-credit asynchronous course will guide students through the process and provide resources on immigration, cultural adaptation, and more.
